A man, haunted by the war, brings the war to his home. Paranoia is the first stage adaptation of Willem Frederik Hermans’s 1948 novella. How do we live with violence? How do we live with each other? This thriller-like play—performed in virtual darkness in the stijlkamer of The Merchant House (Herengracht 254)—links Hermans’s riveting text to our time.
Willem Frederik Hermans is one of the “Big Three” authors of Dutch postwar literature. His most famous works include The Darkroom of Damocles (1958), Beyond Sleep (1966), and An Untouched House, also included in the short story collection Paranoia (1953). This new play is Inge-Vera Lipsius‘s directorial debut, performed by a young ensemble. It was conceived in the context of the Hermans anniversary year and was first performed in the fall of 2022, and revived in the fall of 2023.
The revival of Paranoia follows the success of Lipsius’s second project, Quad Loop, in 2023. Quad Loop has since had its UK premiere (2024) at the Pushkin House in Bloomsbury, London, and was selected, from over 300 submissions, for the Bomb Factory Theatre New Writing Showcase at the Bush Theatre (2025). Lipsius is a graduate of the University of Cambridge and Ecole Philippe Gaulier in France. Her latest piece, Facility 111, was presented at Assembly at the Edinburgh Fringe 2025 (Lyn Gardner’s Top 20 Picks for the Fringe, 4 stars from The Scotsman and Theatre Weekly—with previews at the Omnibus Theatre and the Old Red Lion, and follow-up performances at the Bloomsbury Festival and Voila! Theatre Festival in London, among others).

Een man, achtervolgd door de oorlog, brengt de oorlog naar zijn huis. Paranoia is de eerste toneelbewerking van de novelle van Willem Frederik Hermans uit 1948. Hoe leven we met geweld? Hoe leven we met elkaar? Deze thrillerachtige bewerking – intiem uitgevoerd in de stijlkamer van The Merchant House, aan de Herengracht 254 – verbindt Hermans’ meeslepende novelle met onze tijd.
Willem Frederik Hermans is een van ‘De Grote Drie’ van de naoorlogse Nederlandse literatuur. Tot zijn bekendste werken behoren De donkere kamer van Damokles (1958), Nooit meer slapen (1966) en Het behouden huis, ook opgenomen in de novellebundel Paranoia (1953). Dit nieuwe stuk is het regiedebuut van Inge-Vera Lipsius en wordt gespeeld door een jong ensemble. Het is gemaakt in het kader van het Hermans-jubileumjaar en werd in het najaar van 2022 voor het eerst opgevoerd, en in het najaar van 2023 hernomen.
De herneming van Paranoia volgt het succes van Lipsius’ tweede voorstelling, Quad Loop, in 2023. Quad Loop is sindsdien ook in Londen opgevoerd bij Pushkin House in Bloomsbury (2024), en werd, uit meer dan 300 inzendingen, voor de Bomb Factory Theatre New Writing Showcase geselecteerd bij het prestigieuze Bush Theatre in Londen (2025). Lipsius heeft aan de Universiteit van Cambridge gestudeerd en aan Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Frankrijk.
